International conference on management of radioactive waste from non-power applications - sharing the experience

Abstract

This paper presents some steps of the management of dissused sources, coming from nuclear gauges, received as radioactive waste at CDTN. The goal of the strategy that has been implemented, is to decrease the volume of this radioactive waste, through the reutilization of part of the sources and efficient conditioning of the not reusable ones. The sources of nuclear gauges will be taken-out of the original shielding in a shielded cell, where the reusable ones will be wipe tested. If they do not present leakage the sources will be available to radioisotope users. The not reusable sources will be conditioned into a special packaging placed under the shielded cell, seeking further transport and storage.
